...and He saw a poor widow put in two small cooper coins.  And He said, "Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them."
Luke 21:2-3

Last Thursday, I received a letter from Alex, one of the young girls we sponsor in Rwanda.  In the letter, she shared that her house had fallen down and her goat passed away.  My heart was crushed for Alexia and her family.  Immediately, I emailed the Compassion Director at the Project she attends to obtain more details.  Tuesday, I received an email indicating that Alexia's house had been destroyed.  Alexia, her mother and 2 brothers are living in a building for animals with their pig and another goat.

In the Director's email, I read Luke 21:2-3 being lived out in the lives of other Compassion parents with the Project.  They have collected 50,000 RWF towards helping Alexia's family rebuild their home.  Also, the Parish Church has collected 118,000.  The Lord showed me what sincere, sacrifical giving looks like.  The Compassion parents are giving what they don't have to help Alexia and her family rebuild their home.  People are being the hands of Jesus as they make the mud bricks, cut trees for lumber and give their time to provide for a family in need.  Compassion International Sponsorship releases a child from poverty in the name of Jesus, but also, the Compassion parents work together to love, sustain and care for their families in Christ.  They are living examples of James 1:27 -- Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this:  to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and keep oneself unstained from the world.

What a powerful lesson I have learned this week through sponsoring Alexia and my relationship with Compassion International in the Shyogwe Diocese.  My brothers and sisters are teaching me much in regard to true sacrifice for the sake of others.  Imana ishimwe for His abundant grace and mercy.

This is the building they are living in with their animals.
Alexia is on the right.

In January 2013, I began praying, "Lord break my heart with what breaks Yours."  He is answering this prayer.  As difficult as His answer is at times, I am forever grateful because He is strengthening my faith, hope and transforming my life beyond what I would ever have imagined.  I am praying diligently for Alexia and family.  These pictures are on my desk.  Now I wait for the Lord to show me what the next step is and I trust He will!  Thank you Jesus for the cross and Your amazing grace!

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29: 11

PRAISE and GRATITUDE to God!
Saturday, 10/19 the Lord provided 10 children with Sponsors! Saturday, I had the privilege to serve at a Compassion Event for the first time.  It was a Matthew Smith Concert.  It was so much fun to help Moms, Dads and children find a child they wanted to Sponsor from Asia, Africa, Central America and South America.  What a blessing that 10 children received Sponsors...given hope and a future by God.

Sunday, at Church, we had a Compassion table with 20 child packets available from Rwanda. Once again, it was amazing to help many families find a child to sponsor.  The children eagerly searched the packets for a child with a birthday close to theirs, some chose a Priority child because the child had been waiting 8 to 11 months for a Sponsor or they really liked his/her name. PRAISE GOD 10 children now have Sponsors!!  I was asked to bring the packets back next week by other people.  God's promise of providing hope and a future became a reality for these children on Saturday and Sunday.  They will be rescued from poverty in the name of Jesus Christ!  What a huge blessing this is for the Compassion children, their families, the Sponsors and their families!  My heart is overflowing with gratitude to God!

Sunday, at church, we also sold handcrafts made by women from the Mothers Union of the Shyogwe Diocese in Rwanda.  Once again, I was overjoyed with the generosity of my Apostles family as most of the items were purchased!  Many people asked us to bring back more next year!!!  What a privilege that will be for the Rwanda Team.

I am deeply grateful that the plans God has for my life include a wonderful relationship with brothers and sisters in the Shyogwe Diocese of Rwanda, as well as partnering with Compassion International to release children from poverty in the name of Jesus!  Thank you Lord for showing me that I am not too old for you to make incredible changes in my life!  Amen.

The touch of a child's hand...

This afternoon I have been writing Christmas Cards to our sponsored children, also for children that are in need of sponsors through Compassion International.  As I was writing each card, I would look into the eyes of Belise, Solange, Alexia, and Thierry and pray they know how special and loved they are by Jesus and us.  My thoughts drifted back to June when I met the girls and just how wonderful it felt when we embraced the first time and holding hands.  That memory is etched on my heart.  We went in the Compassion Project's office for introductions and learn about what the Project is doing with the children. We were sitting on a bench listening to the Compassion Directors and I had my arms around all three girls the best I could, when Solange took my arm, wrapped it around her tiny waist and held my hand as tight as she could.  She gently rubbed each finger, my heart melted and a deep love penetrated my heart these amazing children and their mothers.  I felt the touch of Jesus through those little fingers of His precious child.  I had come to meet our girls for the first time on June 13th, share our love with them, play and deliver their gifts, but with the "touch" of these sweet, sweet children and their beautiful smiles, I was the one that received an amazing gift of love!

Thank you Lord for the incredible family you have blessed me with in Rwanda, our Compassion children, everyone at Church of Gikomero and the Shyogwe Diocese!

Prayer makes a difference...
This past week I experienced moments of heartache, happiness and peace.  My mother-in-law, Elaine, was diagnosed with bone cancer, she shattered her pelvis and was transported from the hospital to a Nursing Home in Winchester, KY on Friday.  I am deeply grateful Craig has been with Elaine as he sat by her bed, held her hand, and cried with her as the reality of death came to her and the family.  Elaine is a strong, courageous, compassionate, loving mother and grandmother!  We are grateful Elaine is accepting and at peace, also for her faith in Jesus.  We are grateful for the many prayers that are carrying Elaine and the family through this difficult time. Hugs and prayers at church this morning were such a gift from our Apostles family.  Thank you Lord!

The happiness I experienced came when we received 3 letters from the children we sponsor through Compassion International in Rwanda.  What a smile these letters always put on my face!  God always knows when a special gift of love is needed and he certainly delivered 3 gifts the day those letters arrived.  It is such a joy to pray for Solane, Belise and Alexia daily.  They told us in the letters how we are prayed for daily, as well.  The girls always ask what our prayer needs are and share theirs with us.  Prayer connects our hearts and lives despite being thousands of miles apart.  The Holy Spirit intertwines our lives through prayer!  What an amazing gift that is changing my life.  Thank you Lord!

This was also a special week because two of my dear friends in Rwanda celebrated their birthdays!  I am so grateful for the amazing lives of Clementine and Venant!  They are faithful servants of Christ!  Clementine works with the HIV/Aids Dept. in our Sister Shyogwe Diocese and Pastor Venant is a wonderful shepherd of a Parish where 79 people were baptized a few weeks ago!  Clementine and Pastor Venant are brothers and sisters in Christ.  Through prayers of gratitude for their lives, I was able to celebrate with them.  Thank you Lord!

Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.  I do to give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do be not be afraid."
John 14:27

Thank you Lord Jesus for the gift of prayer this week which made a difference in my life.  Prayer brought peace and joy this week in times of heartache and times of complete happiness.  Thank you Lord we are never alone...You are always with us!

Saturday at 4 p.m. Craig and I received a grand surprise!  I was checking my FB.  Need to say now that I quit FB  few years ago  never to return, but after several friends in Rwanda ask me to sign back up, well upon arrival home, I did just that!  Now back to our grand surprise.  While scrolling through FB, suddenly a notice came up indicating I had a call from John Baptiste!  John Baptiste is the Director of the Zion Compassion Project where I had the visit with my sponsored children.  We have been communicating since my return to Raleigh via email and FB.  He told me that Grace was expecting a baby.  I have been praying for Grace and her baby. On Aug. 17th, John Baptiste and his wife had a baby boy, Isaac.  They were calling to show me Isaac!  I couldn't believe that right before my eyes on the computer were the beautiful smiles of John Baptiste, Grace and their sweet newborn boy, Isaac!  What an incredible blessing!  I could hardly sit still I was so excited!! :)  I am very grateful Craig was close by so he could meet my friends in Rwanda that he knows I miss very much.   The Lord has planted a love for Rwanda in his heart, as well as mine, therefore meeting John Baptiste, Grace and Isaac was truly a special gift for him.  It was great to share this opportunity with Craig!

I have been blessed now with two FB Face time calls from Rwanda.  My dear friends, Joseph and Clementine, called a few weeks ago! Amazing, also to see their faces and hear their voices.  It is difficult to describe the feelings in my heart when my friends from Rwanda call.  My heart fills like it will explode with joy and excitement!   God is so good to provide all of our modern technology!  I never thought I would be grateful to be back on FB, but I am because of how it is being used to connect me with my dear friends in Rwanda.

John Baptiste is in the yellow shirt behind me.  Daniel, Dir. of Shyogwe Compassion Project is in the blue shirt.  Both love the Lord and serve Him faithfully!

Each day is filled with unexpected blessing from the Lord!  When He surprises me like He did today with such a gift of His love through a friend in Christ, my heart overflows with joy and gratitude.  Thank you Lord Jesus!

I am so excited and grateful with the wonderful news which I received in an email this morning.  A young woman from church is going to sponsor little Ninziza with Compassion International.  I absolutely love experiencing the Lord's effortless provision and compassion for His little children, the least of the least.  Ninziza's birthday is Sept. 23 and what an amazing birthday gift he is receiving.  I would love to be present when the Compassion staff from the local project go to Ninziza's home to share this news with him and his parents!  Praise God!  He is gracious, shows compassion and is a God of justice.

Thursday night I heard of the shelling in Rwanda.  Several bombs hit a town, Hanika, we visited in 2012.  We had the opportunity to meet Pastor Edward and tour the Hanika Medical Center and their Technical School.  During our recent visit we spoke with Pastor Pastor, Hanika's new Pastor.  Also, two grenades exploded in Kigali, where my dear friend, Joseph, works and attends University at night.  Yesterday my heart was heavy and concerned. Prayer request were sent out to the Rwanda Partnership Team at church.  The day was spent in prayer, which turned the concern to trust in God's provision for my Rwandan family. I sent Joseph an email to check on everyone and last night I received word that they were safe and the shelling wasn't near them.  Praise God for more answered prayer!!  My brothers and sisters in Rwanda will continue to be in my heart and prayers, also the leaders for wisdom, reconciliation and forgiveness.  I pray for my Rwandan family...Amohoro y"Imana namwe (God's peace be with you).

Above is Joseph, the Pastor, with Rubagobago Parish.  Joseph was ordained in February.

This is the Hanika Medical Center we visited with Pastor Edward and Pastor Venant.

My heart is overflowing with joy today with gratitude to my Lord Jesus.  I know His grace is sufficient!  He is teaching me to trust that He does work all things to good for those who love the Lord.  Thanks be to God!

What an amazing day it has been!  Thanks be to God for the privilege of taking 5 Compassion Registration Forms to FedEx today, which means 5 new sponsors for children on the outskirts of Gitarama, Rwanda. :)   I am rejoicing and thanking the Lord for His provision for these boys and girls.  Also, I am so grateful for friends at Church who will be building lasting relationships with the children through their financial support and letters.

Today we received our first letter from Thierry, age 5,  new little boy we sponsor with the Shyogwe Compassion Project in Rwanda.  Thierry has a mother and father, as well as a 2 yr. old sister.  They depend on agriculture to sustain their family.  Thierry's favorite color is yellow and he likes trucks.  Each time I read his letter it makes me smile!  The letters are written in Kinyarwandan and translated into English.  The amazing thing is I am beginning to understand the Kinyarwandan which is being written by the Compassion staff.  This is encouraging for me as I continue to learn the language.  When I go to the mailbox and see a letter from one of our Compassion children, my heart leaps for joy!

I have the packets for 2 more children in need of sponsors and I am praying with hopeful expectation that God will provide for these precious children.

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Isaac Barasa Okwara
My birthday is Sept. 4, 2009
I live in Kenya.  I am a Priority child with Compassion International because Kenya is a country with high risk for child rights violations.  I have been waiting 7 months for a Sponsor.

Isaac's packet and sweet little face arrived at my house Wed., Aug. 14 in my Compassion Advocate Welcome Kit.  I was told if a Sponsor wasn't found in a week, to let him go, but to be assured his packet would be displayed at a Concert where many Sponsors are found.  I know this is true because when my friend, Katie and I received the names of 39 children from Shyogwe Compassion Project and then called Compassion, 24 of those children had just been selected at a Michael W. Smith Concert.  Praise God!  Katie and I had the privilege of finding the remaining 15 children sponsors.  It is amazing to watch God at work providing for His little children.

I am grateful the Lord allowed me the privilege of trying to locate a sponsor for Isaac, but now it is time to trust God and give Isaac back into His hands.  I am trusting in Jeremiah 29:11-13... "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."  Jesus has a Sponsor in mind for Isaac, someone that will provide for his spiritual, mental and physical well being.  I trust someone will hear the Lord and be HIS hands, eyes and ears to Isaac.  My heart is sad, but grateful for another opportunity to trust in Jesus!

Bring justice to the fatherless...Isaiah 1:17

In January the Holy Spirit penetrated my heart with Isaiah 1:17, to do good, seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.  Thursday, 6/13, Patrick, Eric and I had an incredible opportunity to spend 3 hours with the beautiful children we sponsor through Compassion International.  Three of the children were from the Shyogwe Compassion Project and two children from the Zion Comassion Project.  Patrick's young man is John, 21.  He has completed Driver's Vocation School and hopes to complete another year to be qualified for driving trucks.  Goreta, 13, is Eric's young child and she came with her mother.  Belise, 15, Solange, 8 and Alexia 10 are my precious young children.

Upon arrival, I was surprised to see Belise run out of the office to hug me as soon as I got out of the truck.  She said, "I love you!"  What an incredible gift Belise gave me at that moment.  As I was greeting Belise's mother and sister, I saw a tiny little girl with another girl making their way through the group as they held hands.  Instantly I knew it was Solange and Alexia.  Their mothers were not able to come, but I don't know why.  My heart was sad for the girls, however, that didn't seem to damper their sweet, lively spirits.  It was amazing to hold each child in my arms, and say to each girl, "I love you and Yesu ishimwe! (Jesus be praised)  At that moment, I was overwhelmed with gratitude to our Lord Jesus for the wonderful blessing of meeting the young girls Craig and I sponsor.

We went inside the Zion Compassion Project for introductions.  John, Director of the Kigali Compassion Office, John Baptiste, Director of the Zion Project and Daniel, Director of the Shyogwe Project presented us with their Mission Statement and history of each project.  There are 200 Compassion Projects in Rwanda.

Compassion has 4 areas in which the children are served; medical cognitive, spiritual and academics.  The children attend Church at the Anglican Church in each Project.  Also, some sing in the Church choir.  Every Saturday the child comes to te Compassion Project Center to spend the day receiving the help they need and interacting with one another and the staff.  Compassion provides each child with medical care, which costs $3000 Rwandan Francs and $200 Francs with each visit ($4.65 and $.31 respectively).

After all of the formalities, each child presented their Sponsors with a gift.  One of mine was a basket with two birds sharing a red seed, which represented a heart.  I was told by Belise that just as the birds were attached by sharing a seed (their hearts), she is attached to my heart as our sponsored child.  I assured Belise that our hearts are attached to hers!  Each gift was very special to me and each child was very proud of their gift!  Craig and I gave the girls backpacks loaded with personal and school items.  They immediately had to put the backpacks on.

As a last minute gift, I had purchased each girl hot pink finger nail polish.  What a hit that was!  We had so much as I painted my girls fingernails, Goreta and the mothers finger nails were painted, as well.  After this we went outside to jump rope and play with John's soccer ball.  John was such a kind, generous young man in sharing his new soccer ball and playing with the girls.  We were amazed at their athletic skills.  The jump rope skills each girl had were amazing!  Jump ropes are also very popular!!

We couldn't believe our eyes when petite Solange took the soccer ball and began bouncing it between her legs.  Watching the joy and smiles on their faces as they played and shared their gifts was incredible.  These children really know how to have fun with such simple toys!!  When I was asked to jump rope with them, I thought how am I going to keep my knees from showing and jump in this long skirt, but somehow I managed to jump a few times without missing a beat.  I did show my knees and prayed the adults didn't see them! :)  While Eric and Patrick went to the market to purchase food gifts for each family, the girls and I sang Jesus Loves Me.  I sang in English and they sang in Kinyarwandan.  I just know the Lord smiled down on us as He heard the different languages blending together singing of His love for us.  They sang several songs for me and then taught me to dance!  It was amazing! :)  I also had the opportunity to speak with Belise's mother.  She shared with me that her husband passed away 5 years ago.  At that time, her husband's family ran her off their land and took her home in Buture.  She brought Belise and her sister to Gitarama.  Now they live in a home which someone allows them to share, however, she is not allowed to have any animals to farm because the house isn't hers.  Belise's mother grows beans, cassava, peas and cabbage which she sells at the market when possible.  Eric and Patrick returned with a 20 lb. bag of rice and a gal. of coconut oil for each family.  Belise and her mother's eyes were filled with tears of gratitude.

We had a group picture taken then stood in a circle with the children and mothers in the circle and prayed.  Patrick and Pastor Alfred prayed for each family.  As were driving away and waving good-by, my heart was mixed with joy and deep sorrow for Belise, Solange, Alexia and their mother's due to their extreme, yet at the same time, my heart was overflowing with joy and gratitude at God's goodness and faithfulness.  The Lord had answered my prayers and made the visit possible.  He is also providing hope for each child through Compassion for an opportunity to achieve their God given potential and know how much they are loved.  He also has blessed Craig and I with the sweet, rich privilege of sponsoring these precious girls.  Belise, Solange and Alexia have a piece of my heart which will stay with them in Rwanda.  I pray the Lord will provide another opportunity to visit with them next year as our relationships are growing deeper.

It has been amazing to me as I have watched how the Lord has placed Compassion International in my life on this journey.  As we were waiting to board the plane in Ethiopia for Rwanda, I saw some men with Compassion golf shirts and asked if they were with Compassion.  They were with Compassion in Kigali.  John, the Director, knew my name when I introduced because he had planned our visit!!  I couldn't believe it.  They spent about 20 min. talking with our team.  John had been with the Rwanda Dept. of Commerce and Trade as well as the CIO of an Industry Company, and he left these high paying positions to become Dir. of Compassion International and a Pastor.  On our first day at Shyogwe our translator introduced himself as the Zion Compassion Director, then at lunch I was introduced to Daniel, the Shyogwe Compassion Director.  It was such a blessing to spend our first day in Rwanda with these two new friends.  We exchanged emails to continue our new relationship.  I was rejoicing and praising the Lord all night for these wonderful Compassion contacts He had arranged for me to meet in less than 24 hrs.

Bishop Kalimba shared with us that 40 Parishes have Compassion Projects, approximately 15,000 children are educated.  Many attend University and return to mentor children currently being sponsored.

I can't close this blog without telling you that the Lord Jesus blessed me with the opportunity to spend time with mt dear, dear friend, Clementine, her husband Pastor Joseph, as well as their new baby, Benaiah.  We have had several opportunities to spend treasured time together, which is more answered prayer.

This journey has been full of great joy and deep sorrow as I witness the suffering of our friends, but also such hope, faith and trust in God's eternal Kingdom being spread here in the Land of 1000 Hills.  The Lord is breaking my heart with what breaks His.  I am deeply grateful and blessed to walk with my brothers and sisters in Christ of Rwanda.  Imana ibane namwe!  God be with you, my sweet friends and new family!
